Punta Arenas

Punta Arenas lies on the Southern tip of Chile and is considered by Chileans to be the southernmost city of the world (which is officialy held by Ushuaia in Argentina). It's a relaxing place that serves mostly as a travel hub for Tierra del Fuego and Puerto Natales (Torres del Paine).

If you're in a shopping mood the huge duty free shopping zone is the place to be. Some energetic nightclubs let you show off your cumbia moves.

Punta Arenas Highlights

Plaza Muñoz Gamero
The main plaza and the heart of Punta Arenas. Lush exotic pine trees and the monument commemorating the 400th anniversary of Magellan's voyage decorate the plaza. Impressive mansions surround Plaza Muñoz Gamero.

Castillo Milward
This house belonged to Bruce Chatwin enigmatic relative who inspired the author to journey to Patagonia. His life is chronicled in Chatwin's famous book 'In Patagonia'.

Palacio Mauricio Braun
An opulent mansion showing the wealth and power some of the pioneer sheep farmers attained in the late 19th century.

Instituto de La Patagonia
Houses the Museo del Recuerdo. A collection of antique farm and industrial machinery from Europe is exhibited.

Museo Naval y Maritimo
Navel and maritime museum with exihibitions on model ships, naval history and the astonishing vist of 27 US warships to Punta Arenas in 1908.

Mirador Cerro La Cruz
A great place just a few minutes up some steps from the main plaza. The Strait of Magellan and Tierra del Fuego can be seen in the distance.
