Day 1:

El Calafate.  Today you are free to enjoy El Calafate and your tour leader will be able to provide suggestions on how to spend your time, and assist in any arrangements for you. Perhaps enjoy an optional excursion such as horse riding, hiking or a 4 x 4 trip in the surrounding countryside. The area is famous for its handmade chocolate and El Calafate is a great place to sample it!  Or you may chose to stroll around the bird sanctuary on the shores of Lake Argentina

Your tour leader will provide information on meeting back up with the group in the evening.

Day 2:

El Calafate - Perito Moreno Glacier.  After breakfast we depart by bus en route to the Magellan Peninsula, where the entrance of  the Glaciers National Park is located. The highlight of this area is the Perito Moreno Glacier, which, because of unusually favourable local conditions, is one of the world's few glaciers in equilibrium. The glacier is a massive field of ice towering  60 metres high and reaching five kilometres across. It is an awesome sight to behold, and even more so when massive chunks of ice break off and plunge into the icy water of De los Tempanos Channel below: the roar of the gigantic ice rocks falling and crashing into the waters of the channel is a unique and memorable experience. Our bus will drop us off just in front of the glacier, allowing us to stroll along the walkways to view the glacier from different viewpoints. This is followed by a boat trip that brings us very close to the glacier ice walls ensuring that you get spectacular views from all the best vantage points. We return to El Calafate using a different route to the one we arrived by.

Day 3:

Bus to El Chalten - Mount Torre.  We catch an early morning bus to El Chalten, arriving around midday in this tiny Patagonian town, which is considered to be Argentina’s trekking capital. El Chalten is dwarfed by the magnificent, surrounding mountains and the views of these peaks, with their jagged peaks puncturing the Patagonian sky, are breathtaking. This is the northernmost section of the Parque Nacional Los Glaciares, and there are countless hiking opportunities branching out in every direction from this little haven. Shortly after arriving in El Chalten, we beng trekking for between 4 to 5.5 hours, depending upon the weather.  The trail leads us through the forest to Lake Capri and the Piedras Blancas glacier viewpoint (1.5 hours). Another hour on the trail brings us to the Fitz Roy base field,  and more stunning views of the De los Tres Glaciar.  We continue along via the Madre e Hija lagoon trail, descending via the Torre valley (approx 2 hours) and arrive at evening at our camp at Torre Lagoon.

Day 4:

Glacier Adventure - Mount Torre.  Early next morning, a hearty breakfast provides us the energy for this demanding and spectacular day. All we need today are crampons, harnesses and a daily backpack containing gloves, sunglasses, water, and our cameras. We depart from our camp, crossing River Fitz Roy river using a Tyrolean (horizontal rope fixed on both sides of the river) and our harnesses, followed by a hike around the lake towards the glacier. Once on the glacier, we put our crampons on and start our trek on the glacier, visiting and exploring cracks, caverns and waterfalls. After fixing our security devices, we receive ice climbing tuition and can practice this exciting activity! (Approx 8hrs)

We then return to El Chalten around 6 pm where we take a bus to El Calafate and spend the night there.

Day 5:

Torres Del Paine.  We depart early in the morning (around 8 am) from El Calafate to Torres Del Paine by bus through the spectacular Patagonian Choiques.  En route there will be a stop at the town of Puerto Natales where we will have lunch and then change to our private transfer vehicle and continue our journey until we reach the Torres del Paine National Park in Chile. UNESCO has awarded this park World Heritage status, due to its unique wildlife and magnificent scenery. As well as the stunning scenery, the park is home to a variety of fauna and flora, including condors, guanacos and rheas (the South American ostrich). We will visit several panoramic viewpoints such as the Nordenskjöld Lake and the "Cuernos del Paine" (Paine Horns), before arriving at  our stunning camp at Camping Pehoe.

Day 6:

Las Torres - Ascensio River Valley.  Today we undertake one of the most spectacular and classical treks in the park: the Torres Trail. After breakfast we transfer by bus to start of the trail, crossing a suspension bridge and trekking up the slopes of Mount Almirante Nieto, bordering the Ascencio River (approx 1 hour). After an ascent, we reach a valley and the trail leads us through the forest (approx 2 hours), in the midst of stunning landscapes, to Las Torres base camp. We trek for one hour more to reach the Las Torres Viewpoint, an amazing natural amphitheatre at the bottom of the famed vertical granite towers that reach 2800 meters height. Not only does it provide beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and valleys, but also breathtaking views of the towers. We then return along the same trail and transfer back to camp for dinner.

Day 7:

Grey Lagoon - Ferrier Viewpoints.  Another unforgettable day dedicated to the Grey Glacier; an impressive 300km2 and 25 kms long.  Our day will begin by taking a ferry across Lake Pehoe.  This will be followed by an 11 km walk along the edge of Lake Grey with time to enjoy the stunning views from the various lookout points.  After walking northwards we will take the Lake Grey ferry to Hosteria Grey.  This ferry is a highlight of any visit to Torres del Paine. Depending on weather conditions the ferry allows for stunning views of the Grey Glacier wall and ice formations.  For those feeling the cold there is also the opportunity to enjoy some bracing whiskey with glacial ice.  Our ferry ride will end at Hosteira Grey where we will be transferred back to camp.

Day 8:

Torres del Paine - Punta Arenas.  We leave Torres del Paine after breakfast, bound for nearby Puerto Natales. There we have time to lunch and stroll around this little port town and its port. Leaving Puerto Natales in mid-afternoon, we continue travelling south, stopping to visit the Ottway Sound Colony of Magellan penguins before we finally arrive in Punta Arenas in the early evening.

Day 9:

Punta Arenas - Tierra Mayor Valley.  An early morning departure from Punta Arenas brings us to the Straits of Magellan, and we sail across by ferry. On the other side of the Straits we will continue south through the fabled island of Tierra del Fuego (Land of Fire). After lunch at Rio Grande, our journey continues and we will see the beautiful Fagnano Lake, then drive along a mountain path through the Andes mountain range to arrive to our mountain refuge, located in the Tierra Mayor Valley. We then visit a nearby area which is home to beavers, learning about all the changes the beavers are causing in the area.  We then return to the refuge for a traditional Argentine picada dinner.

Day 10:

Tierra Mayor Valley - Ushuaia. Today we visit the surroundings of the refuge area; we'll enjoy the wonderful Esmeralda (Emerald) Lagoon, where we trek through the largest peat bog in the southern hemisphere and learn about the the geography and geology of this unique area. We'll also take in the view of the Ojos del Albino Glacier, heading into Ushuaia in the afternoon.  The rest of the day will be free for you to explore the city before enjoying dinner in the World’s Southernmost City.

Day 11:

Ushuaia. Your tour ends in Ushuaia after breakfast. If you are staying on in Ushuaia, you might want to sample the local seafood or the Patagonian lamb. Perhaps make an excursion to Tierra del Fuego National Park where you can hike through beautiful beech forest and enjoy the stunning coastal hiking trails. Alternatively you might want to enjoy an optional boat cruise through the Beagle Channel.

Please Note:

Please be aware that arrival times and the itinerary may change due to unforeseen delays or events such as festivals and public holidays. However, we shall endeavour to ensure all sites are visited and that your tour runs as smoothly as possible but please note that Latin America does not run like clockwork, therefore do not expect the streamlined travel arrangements associated with some other continents. Things do not always go to plan; there will be times when you will need to be patient and philosophical about your travels. Conditions in South America can change rapidly and changes to the itinerary may be necessary.

Be flexible, you will enjoy your tour much more. Kumuka makes a point of visiting the indigenous populations of each country you visit, in order to give a true reflection of the country; please treat the local people and their customs with respect.

Lastly, your tour leader is always conscious of everybody's views, but sometimes he/she will have to make an unpopular decision and your understanding will be appreciated in these circumstances.

Climate Information:

Travel Tip: Always bring a lightweight, waterproof jacket and/or an umbrella even during the height of summer - this should prepare you for anything!

In Patagonia temperatures can fall to below zero, even in the height of summer. Be prepared for very cold conditions. You should bring a warm jacket, gloves and woolly hat if you are doing a trip in Patagonia.

Security:
Do not take unnecessary valuables with you.
A money belt, or something similar, worn close to your body is the best way to carry passports, airline tickets and money.
DO NOT leave any valuables in ANY hotel room in South America, please use SAFETY DEPOSIT BOXES.
Pickpockets operate everywhere, particularly in tourist areas and in crowded markets; you must always exercise care.
Be aware that anything left lying around will also be liable to theft.
Kumuka vehicles have secure doors and windows but it is never foolish to be cautious.
Books and
Reading Material:

You might like to read up on the destinations that you are about to visit as these cities all have interesting sites and histories. We recommend a variety of guidebooks such as Lonely Planet, The Rough Guide and Insight Guides. All these publications have good general information as well as more specific country information that will help orientate you in the countries you visit.

Money:

We suggest passengers budget for between US$25-30 per day for personal expenses, souvenirs, evening out, alcoholic drinks etc. Be aware that some countries are more expensive than others and that if you are travelling through several your expenses will vary enormously. Similarly there will be some days when you spend nothing at all and others when you exceed your budget.

Take your money is US dollars only. This the only foreign currency readily exchanged in Latin America.

Traveller’s cheques should be AMERICAN EXPRESS. American Express is the most widely accepted. Cash is far easier to exchange than Travellers Cheques, but also more risky as once lost, is irreplaceable.

However, we do recommend that you take some US dollars cash in small denominations ($10 and $20). In many countries, you may exchange US Dollars traveller’s cheques for US cash, or retrieve US dollars cash from ATMs (with a credit card), usually for a small commission but please do not rely solely on this option.

Credit cards are accepted frequently, particularly in the larger cities. They can also be used to get money from ATMs. Visa, MasterCard and American Express are the most widely accepted credit cards. Visa being the most useful.

Local Customs:

Please use your discretion and be sensitive to cultural differences in the countries that you visit, in particular visits to religious buildings and when taking photographs. Your Tour Leader will advise you of any specific customs to observe.

Luggage and
Personal Equipment:

How much should I take?

  • The best rule for packing is to limit your self to a weight limit of 20 KGs. It will inconvenience you and your fellow passengers if you bring more. If your luggage does not arrive at the airport, please inform your crew at the Pre Departure Meeting.
  • A frameless or internally framed backpack is the best way to carry your belongings since it is easy to lift on and off vehicles. Please note that we do not recommend that passengers bring suitcases.
  • A small daypack is practical for keeping general items (e.g. camera, books, wallets etc.) at hand when your main pack is out of reach. It is also handy for day trips and excursions. This can also be used for carrying 2 days of clothing so it is not always necessary to unload the large backpacks every night.
  • Sleeping Bag - a good quality sleeping bag, rated for sub-zero conditions is the best for tours, which travel through the Andes and Patagonia. You can purchase extra blankets in South America cheaply. We recommend a Four Seasons sleeping bag.
  • Inner Sheet - for your sleeping bag. Can also be used as a sleeping bag when it's hot.
  • Sleeping Mat - A self-inflating mat. "Thermarest" is best, although a compressed foam mat is adequate.
  • Mosquito Net -if you wish to sleep outdoors. All tents have built in mosquito nets.
  • We also recommend that you keep your passport, credit cards travellers cheques etc. on you at all times, preferably in a money belt worn under your clothes.

TRAVEL TIP: You might be tempted to buy a few souvenirs here and there, so leave a little room for those extra purchases!!

Personal Effects:

Quick drying clothes are recommended as there is limited time available for getting laundry down in hotels, however your tour leader will advise where this is possible.

Personal Effects:

Good sturdy hiking boots, camera and film/memory cards, spare passport photos, water bottle, money belt, sewing kit, sunhat/sunglasses (essential for glacier excursions), CD's, books, wet ones, soap to wash clothes, writing materials, swiss army knife, calculator, personal toiletries (including tampons), contraceptives, insect repellent, high protection factor sunscreen.

Time: For detailed information see www.timezoneconverter.com
Language:

Spanish is the language most widely spoken in the countries we visit in Latin America but English will be spoken in the larger cities. You might like to take the time before your trip to read up on the country you will be visiting and perhaps learn a few words of the language. Your effort will always be welcomed and will make your trip all the more enjoyable.

Photography:

All types of camera film are readily available in Latin America; however, it is often cheaper to purchase it in your country of origin or through duty free.

As a guideline, most people use approximately one to two rolls of 36 per week. Fast film (200-400 ASA) may be useful at times and black & white film is nice to use for portraits of local people. A zoom lens is also useful.

Please remember, we are guests in the countries through which we travel and we may sometimes inadvertently cause offence by taking photographs without first asking permission.

Most Latin American countries have very strict rules about taking photos of army, police or any official personnel; restrictions apply at borders, bridges and any government building. Please exercise care in this regard as the penalty may be to have your film and/or camera confiscated. It is absolutely forbidden by law to take photos at any borders, as they are all active military installations.

Food:

Local Restaurants - Latin American food is delicious, nutritious and varied and local restaurants provide an important insight into local ways of life. There is always an excellent range of restaurants to choose from. An evening meal can range from US$5 up to US$20. Most travellers spend an average of US$5 to US$15 plus drinks. Local alcoholic drinks are generally inexpensive even in restaurants and bars.

Vegetarians are easily catered for.

Accommodation:

We have put a lot of thought and effort into locating the most appropriate type of accommodation for each tour. We choose our hotels, guesthouses and hostels for their location, comfort, security and hygiene standards. All are located near the city centre usually within easy walking distance of services and facilities. Most rooms are on a twin, double or triple share basis with private bathrooms.

Accommodation is not included in the city of departure or arrival (unless within the specified tour dates). Passengers doing a combination tour will have accommodation included when passing through a joining city (maximum 2 nights) providing they have booked on the combination tour code.

You should allow US$25 to US$40 per day to cover food and accommodation during this time.

Pre & Post
Tour Accommodation:

All our tours begin with a pre-departure meeting when you meet your tour leader, driver and fellow travellers. If you wish to spend a few additional days in your start city before the departure of your tour, then we can arrange accommodation for you. On the last day of the tour we usually arrive at our final destination in the late afternoon, when the tour ends. If you would like to book accommodation for that night or even stay additional nights, we will be more than happy to arrange this for you as well. All our accommodation is carefully chosen, conveniently located, clean and comfortable. (All rates per person per night and subject to availability).

Participation:

The more you put into your tour the greater the experience you will get from your trip. It is all about participation and mucking in with your fellow passengers!

Please note: The longer Kumuka tours are combinations of shorter tours. Lima and La Paz are also pickup and drop off points for passengers so new faces and personalities will join the tours.

Tipping and Bargaining:

For better or for worse, tipping is an accepted part of everyday life and although it is always at your discretion, you will be expected to tip to reward service.

Drug Policy:

Under no circumstances are any illegal drugs allowed on any part of the trip. Anyone discovered in possession of any such drugs, will be asked to leave the tour immediately without question or refund.

Optional Activities:

Kumuka endeavors to advertise a compliment of optional activities available locally during tours with selected ground handlers to make your tour more enjoyable. These ground handlers and activity partners are selected for their standards in quality, professional ability and reputation. Whereas, Kumuka has developed a travel insurance policy to cover all activities offered during your journey, Kumuka can not be held responsible for injuries or claims arising from adventurous activities by third party.

There is a list on our website of optional excursions available at your expense on your tour. Please note that these are intended as a guide only and prices and availability cannot be guaranteed.

Your tour leader will be able to organise any optional excursions on your behalf.   There will be many other optional activities available.  All activities are undertaken at passenger’s own risk.
