Introduction:

In just one week you will get to experience the vibrant energy of Rio de Janeiro now home to one of the new 7 wonders of the world, the Statue of Christ the Redeemer, the vast flooded wetlands of the Pantanal, a bird-watcher’s dream, and finally the awe-inspiring Iguassu Waterfalls, one of the world’s greatest natural wonders. Brazil, a land of immense natural beauty with thousands of exotic species of animals and plants, and many different cultures that are united in dance and music, and a genuine friendliness and humour that is both welcoming and infectious.

Day 1:

Rio de Janeiro. Arrival day, you will be picked up from the airport and transferred to our hotel, giving you a chance to relax and freshen up after your flight. There will be a pre-departure meeting at 6pm where you get to meet your guide and the rest of the group. Overnight in Rio.

Day 2:

Rio de Janeiro. Today we visit two of Rio’s major attractions. First stop is the statue of Christ the Redeemer, the quintessential postcard image of Rio de Janeiro. Viewable from anywhere in the city this amazing sculpture was inaugurated in 1931 and now majestically stands 710 metres above sea-level atop the mountain of Corcovado. To reach the top we travel by bus to the Cosme Velhos neighbourhood where we board a specially built cog train that winds it way through the Tijuca Forest, the largest urban forest in the world, up to the statue. On a clear day views extend to Sugar Loaf Mountain, Guanabara Bay, the beaches of the Southern Zone and the Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon. Then we move on to explore Sugar Loaf Mountain, driving through downtown Rio, with its fine, colonial-style, Portuguese buildings, and continue on to Praia Vermelha (red beach). At this point we climb on board the cable car system that will take us to the top offering stunning views of the city nestled between the mountains and the sea. After riding down the cable car, our coach returns to the hotel. Overnight in Rio.

Day 3:

Rio – Cuiaba – Pantanal.  We leave Rio and catch an early morning flight to Cuiaba, where we will transfer to our jungle lodge located in the Pantanal. The journey from Cuiaba to the Pantanal along the “transpantaneira” route is a safari ride in itself, offering many photo opportunities. The Pantanal is the world’s largest interior wetland and one of Mother Nature’s favourite playgrounds. The abundance and diversity of its vegetation and animal life is spectacular. As many as 242 species of fishes, 650 species of birds, 110 different mammals and 50 species of reptiles have already been identified, in addition to the 1,500 plant species: the biggest concentration of wildlife in the Americas. Dinner will be served at the lodge.

Day 4:

Pantanal. After breakfast, we head out on a boat tour to enjoy the Pantanal landscapes and wildlife. There is a good chance of seeing capybaras, caimans, giant otters, hyacinth macaws, herons, and if lucky, a jaguar. We will also get to try our hand at traditional piranha fishing, before heading back to the lodge for lunch. In the afternoon, you can enjoy trail walking around the lodge in search of flora, birds and other animals, or lounge by the pool. After dinner, we go on a night safari in search of alligators and other nocturnal wildlife. Overnight in the Pantanal.

Day 5:

Pantanal – Cuiaba.  Birds and animals are most active in the mornings, so why not join us on our early morning sunrise hike (alternatively, you can relax in bed at the lodge!).  After breakfast we enjoy a leisurely and relaxing horseback ride through the surrounding fields and forests of the Pantanal (no previous horse-riding experience is necessary). We return to the lodge for lunch and then make our way back to Cuiaba, a pleasant cowboy town that thrives on cattle ranching. Overnight in Cuiaba.

Day 6:

Cuiaba - Iguassu Falls.  Private transfer out for the early morning flight to Foz de Iguassu, arriving at lunch-time. We will be met at the airport by our English speaking guide and transferred to our hotel which is set in 27 acres of protected tropical gardens and woodland, and located just 500m from the waterfalls. The hotel is highly involved in nature conservation, having solar energy to heat the water, a natural water source at a depth of 192m, recycling of non-organic litter, and treatment of organic waste. The afternoon will be free to enjoy the lush grounds of the hotel or visit the neighbouring Bird-Park (optional, and only 150m from the hotel) where you can see an impressive selection of tropical birds including multi-coloured tanagers, tucans, roseate spoonbills, egrets and scarlet macaws, and other animals such as anacondas, marmosets and alligators. Overnight in Foz de Iguassu.

Day 7:

Iguassu Falls.  Today we visit one of the world’s most amazing natural wonders, the Iguassu Falls, on a 4 hour guided tour of the Brazilian side. Neither words nor photographs do them justice, they simply have to be seen and heard! Iguassu Falls straddles the border of Brazil and Argentina, and consists of about 275 falls in a horseshoe shape along 2.7 kilometres of the Iguassu River. With some falls up to 82 metres in height, the name Iguassu comes from the Guarani words y (water) and guasu (big) and it is rivalled only by Victoria Falls in Southern Africa. However, Iguassu affords better views and walkways, and at one point, you can stand and be surrounded by 260 degrees of waterfalls. The waterfalls were made a UNESCO World Heritage site in the 1980’s and are part of a singular, practically virgin jungle eco-system. In peak flow, the water flowing over Iguassu has a surface area of approximately 400,000 square metres and the annual peak flow is 6.5 million litres of water per second. The falls are four times the width of ,and also taller than Niagara Falls, and the thunder of the water can be heard from miles away. The rest of the day is free to venture to the Argentinian side of the Falls (optional - please consult your nearest Argentine Embassy prior to travel to check if you require a visa to visit Argentina), but we recommend taking the Macuco Boat Safari (optional) which takes you on a rollercoaster boat ride up the gorge into the roaring thunder of the falls; prepare to have you breath taken away! Overnight in Foz de Iguassu.

Day 8:

Iguassu Falls.  Tour ends after breakfast. Private transfer to the airport for your flight out.

Money

We suggest clients budget for between US$25-30 per day for personal expenses, souvenirs, evenings out, alcoholic drinks etc. There will be some days when you spend nothing at all and others when you exceed your budget.

Take your money is US dollars only. This the only foreign currency readily exchanged in Latin America.

Traveller’s cheques should be AMERICAN EXPRESS. American Express is the most widely accepted. Cash is far easier to exchange than Travelers Cheques, but also more risky as once lost, is irreplaceable. However, we do recommend that you take some US dollars cash in small denominations ($10 and $20).

Credit cards are accepted frequently, particularly in the larger cities. They can also be used to get money from ATMs. VISA, MasterCard and American Express are the most widely accepted credit cards, VISA being the most useful.

Local Customs:

Please use your discretion and be sensitive to cultural differences in the countries that you visit, in particular when visiting religious buildings and when taking photographs.

Language:

Spanish is the language most widely spoken in the countries we visit in Latin America but English is spoken a little bit in the larger cities. You might like to take the time before your trip to read up on the country you will be visiting and perhaps learn a few words of the language. Your effort will always be welcomed and will make your trip all the more enjoyable.
