What is an Overland Tour?
|
|
Overland tours take place onboard the famous blue Kumuka overland truck which is recognised all over South America as the very symbol of outdoor adventure. Tours are a combination of camping and hotels (eg. Patagonian tours: 75% camping, 25% hotels). Overland tours are participation tours and everyone gets involved in the day to day running of the trip pitching in to cook, clean and set up camp. The more you put in to a tour, the more you’ll get out of it and the more smoothly the trip will run.

Small groups… less is more. When you travel on an overland tour with Kumuka, you will be travelling with no more than 20 fellow travellers, considerably less than many other operators.
How is this beneficial? With trips ranging in duration from a couple of weeks to several months and with some journeys involving longer periods on the vehicle, you will appreciate the extra comfort, space and less herd-like feeling that a smaller group offers. It’s also a part of our commitment to responsible tourism – with fewer travellers on each of our journeys we are able to tread lightly.

The Vehicles
The big blue truck will virtually be your home (perhaps for many weeks) so we make our trucks as comfortable as possible. Onboard you’ll find mostly forward facing seats, a a fridge and/or cool box, stereo, safe for valuables, emergency oxygen supplies and even a small library. There is ample storage space and all of the camping/cooking equipment is carried on board. Our vehicles carry a range of spare parts and they are all well maintained by local mechanics. Constructed to our specifications, our rugged trucks take mountains, deserts and riverbeds in their stride and will carry you off the beaten track. Your crew will consist of a driver and a tour leader who will be there to assist and offer their support and knowledge

Camping
Camping plays an important role in your exploration of South America. We camp at designated camp sites, plus free camps (no facilities) and all of our dome tents fit two people. If you are travelling solo you will be paired up with someone of the same sex. It is essential that you bring your own sleeping bag and mat.

Local Payment
Our local payment covers all meals prepared by the group, campsite and hotel accommodation for passengers and crew plus essential excursions. The local payment is payable to your tour leader in US dollars cash at the pre departure meeting and is administered by the tour leader and one of the passengers.
Hotels
When we are not camping you’ll enjoy an interesting variety of other accommodation, from small hotels and guest-houses to lakeside cabins or even family stays! Kumuka can also provide pre and post tour accommodation for you. Please ask for more details.

Food
3 Meals a day are provided whilst camping. Cooking is done over a campfire or gas cookers and you will be suprised at the quality of food prepared and the generous helpings. Hygene is very important and strict routines are followed to keep you healthy and happy. Special diets can be catered for - let your travel consultant know about your dietary requirements in advance.
