Default Need Advice...Chile to NYC

Hi guys,

this is my first post on this forum.

My friend and I are currently on a 12 month round the world trip...we are 6 months in and are heading to Santiago, Chile around the start of June. Our flight home is September from NYC. We need some advice on how to get from Chile to as near as Central America as poss.

We plan on taking a coach from Santiago to Igazu falls and across to Sao Paulo, and Rio...from Rio we want to get as near to Central A as poss. How much is the renowned 100 hour bus??Looked into flying from Rio to Lima, but it is posing a little costly. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Thanks,Natalie.

Default Overland from Rio de Janeiro to Lima

Hi Natalie,

Great to hear you're heading to Santiago en Chile. Wonderful country!

Colombia and Venezuela are the nearest countries to Central America. Both are very far from Rio de Janeiro.

As far as I know there is no bus that travels from Rio to Lima in one go. The trip is made with stopovers. It takes about 6 or 7 days. From Lima it's still a long way to Bogota or Caracas. Considering the number of stopovers traveling by bus may not be the cheapest option altogether.

Route 1: Bus & Train
Bus Rio - Campo Grande (22 hours)
Bus Campo Grande - Corumba (6 hours)
Cross border from Corumba to Quijarro (Bolivia) by taxi / local bus.
Train Quijarro - Santa Cruz (16-24 hours, depending on class)
Bus Santa Cruz - La Paz (12 hours)
Bus La Paz - Cuzco (Peru) (12 hours)
Bus Cuzco - Lima (20 hours)

Route 2: Bus
Rio - Iguazu (24 hours)
Iguazu -Asuncion (Paraguay) (6 hours)
Asuncion - Santa Cruz (Bolivia) (22 hours)
Santa Cruz - La Paz (12 hours)
La Paz - Cuzco (Peru) (12 hours)
Cuzco - Lima (20 hours)

Keep us posted about your trip!

Best wishes,

Mark
