Thanks for a great site Mark, great info to start our planning.
Two of us would like to go for about 6mts backpacking in South America. As we will probably be arriving early December and I think it is the rainy season we thought we would probably start in Rio and work our way up as far as we can. Is Rio the right place to start for December- if it is the rainy season or would suggest another country to start where we might miss a bit of the rain. We would like to see the normal sites as well as maybe do some surfing, beach bumming on our way. |

I’d like suggest Argentina, which is speedily growing into a major backpacking destination along with nearby Brazil. Buenos Aires is better place because the weather in December is absolutely suitable for your requirement.
Moreover, it is a host to long coastline of Andes Mountains. I’d defiantly recommend travelers to take a tour towards this place. |

I have lived in Buenos Aires for the past 4 years, and have never really had bad rain in December. For me, the rainy season has always been march/april. So maybe start out with the activity/beach part of your trip when you arrive, and leave the stuff that is more relaxed for the end of your trip.
