Hi Mark,

I am planning to take 3 months out of work to travel South America, this November - January with my boyfriend and have found your website very useful for advice. We would like to do many things including the inca trail and amazon trip, and were thinking because of the time of year it would be best to do these first, weather wise. Would you agree?

Also can you suggest a route to avoid heavy rainfalls, or is this simply not possible at this time of year? Is there anywhere we should definitely avoid because of bad weather?

Thanks,
Laura

Hi Laura,

It's indeed a good idea to go to Machu Picchu and the Amazon as soon as possible.

In Peru the climate varies according to area. It may rain heavily in the mountains and jungle from December to April. It hardly ever rains in Lima nor most of the coast, except for Tumbes and Piura, which have tropical climates.

In Brazil rainy seasons occur from January to April in the north, April to July in the northeast and November to March in the Rio/São Paulo area.

You should inquire about road conditions before traveling from La Paz to either Rurrenabaque or Sorata. Those roads are very dangerous during the rainy season and are sometimes closed for all traffic.

Also inquire about road conditions when traveling in the Amazon basin. Weather conditions can be very unpredictable during the rain season although I've not had any problems when traveling in the Amazon basin in November/December.

Don't hesitate to ask more questions if something is still bugging you. I'll do my best to help you out.

Best wishes,

Mark
