Default Money

Hi Mark,

Your website has been a great help to me while planning my backpacking trip from Quito to Rio for 8 months starting on October 16th!

However, I was just wondering what is the best method to carry money around South America for such an amount of time? Obviously I don't want to carry all my cash round for 8 months but I'm struggling to find a debit/cash card that offers me good withdraw and exchange rates in South America...

Also are travellers cheques a good idea in South America?

Thanks for your help,

Ben

Hi Ben,

Your best bet is to diversify. I had some cash with me stuffed in different places in my backpack and a credit card (VISA). Having some cash with you (US dollars) is especially of use when you cross borders and want to exchange for local currency on the streets. Travelers cheques offer an excellent alternative option to have money on the road. You'll have no problems cashing them in South America.

Have fun! Keep us posted!

Best wishes,
Mark

Cheers for the help! You cleared that small worry up for me

One more thing...have you got any information regarding alternate Inca Trail options i.e. not following all the crowds and finding a less worn (and possibly cheaper) trail up?

Cheers again,

Ben

The Lares trek is an excellent alternative hike to visit Machu Picchu. You can read more about the Lares trek here.

Feel free to ask away if you have more questions!
