CHOOSING A HOTEL ROOM: Before arriving in the next town. Try to have some idea of where you are going to stay and where things are in the town ( The South America Handbook usually has a little map). I never went with anyone who was handing out pamphlets or saying come and stay with their family..Its always best to have some idea where you are going when you walk out of a bus or train station. Your room or hotel is best centrally located near whatever it is you plan to do there, beach, museum etc..If someone you met along the way stayed at a place and recommend it. Ask if it was clean if the food was good. Did anyone get sick or were missing anything in their rooms. WRITE THE NAME IN YOUR BOOK! If you don’t have a recommendation your best bet maybe in the guide book.. When in doubt spend a few extra bucks. Its better than having something taking from your room or getting sick on breakfast. Especially if its only for one or two nights. The more confidence you have in your room the more you can leave behind while you are out.. Your Passport and money should be in some kind of a belt with the zipper locked (hidden under your shirt ). When possible leave it hidden in the room. Only take the money you need! Especially if you are walking around at night! Happy Trails!!!!!!!!!

Unwary tourists can make easy targets for thieves because they stand out in a crowd, are unused to their surroundings, and are generally carrying money, credit cards and valuables like cameras. You can reduce your risk of being mugged or robbed by taking a few simple precautions. It is a good idea to research the safety of your intended destination with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. This government department keeps an updated bulletin on travel destinations, covering factors such as political unrest or criminal activities that target tourists. You could also consult with your travel agent, or talk to friends who have already visited your intended destination.

These also some tips that are useful for travel-:
1)Keep your travel plans, including accommodation details, to yourself. 2)Try not to travel at night. 3)Avoid 'seedier' areas of the cities you visit, especially at night. 4)Don't hitch hike. 5)As a general rule, city streets that include children and women suggest the area is safe for families. 6)Ask your hotel manager for advice on 'safe' versus 'unsafe' local areas. 7)Keep a photocopy of your passport and all other important documents in a safe place. 8)Use ATMs during the day, when there are people around. 9)Carry with you at all times the contact details of the Australian embassy. If your city doesn't have an Australian embassy, find out which other country's embassy is available to help you, such as the British embassy. 10)Try to rely more on credit cards and travellers cheques than cash. |
